MLP FIM Season 4 Premier

Big fan of this show and what it has accomplished. Just wanted to get that out of the way. Not because I am ashamed, but because I might get a little harsh during this review. Now that that's out of the way, my opinion of the premier of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's fourth season is...

...pretty positive, actually. Not perfect, but I liked the foundation it set. I do have a couple of nitpicks though.

First of all, this episode, besides the box at the end, didn't provide anything new. Comparing other season premier and finales, which introduced the characters and plot in season 1, graced us with new characters and 2 new villains in season 2, and one more villain, a new location, and a MAJOR character change in season 3. Twilight can fly now? What can be explored from that? What are her princess duties? To be completely honest, while fairly awesome, season 3 is probably my least favorite season, as it builds a lot of lore and character, but leaves it a little too open for my book. Maybe Magical Mystery Cure and Equestria Girls felt very "final", as if the show had done it's run and was packing up.

That's a personal problem though, as many fans might disagree. Season 4, however, is the topic for today. I am a big fan of continuity, and that's the season 4 premier in a nutshell. It confirmed what a lot of fan art and theories came up with about the limited access we had to this show's history. Celestia's unwillingness to hurt Luna and her shame when she can't do anything but the worst to stop her, as well as Celestia and Luna's struggle to stop Discord from torturing all that they hold dear. Finally, we see how Discord was acting when he was turned to stone, and what he was up to when this occurred.

Discord was a part of the premier that I will praise from infinity and back. Not only was he still funny, more importantly, he was still cruel. People don't change overnight, and Discord still has his own sense of twisted fun. Even better, though, is that Discord is still smart. Or at least we get another example of why he is the king of chaos. Discord is still part of the problem, as much as I love the character. We already know he's smart, this just confirms it. We already know Celestia beat Nightmare Moon, this just confirms it. We already know they stopped Discord, this just confirms it. I'm actually surprised we didn't see early Sombra, at the rate we were going.

I'm intrigued about this box. A season long quest? Quite the venture from the slice of life stories, but according to synopsis reveal there will still be episodes like that. I'm curious to where they go with that. No more elements of harmony too. Can't just point and shoot at whatever is bothering them now. New foes will  require careful planning and fighting (or tricking, it is a little kids show) the new enemy into submission.

A mixed bag, but I liked the premier. I'm just grateful that there isn't a giant hiatus between the foundation and future episodes like there was for season 2, or I might go crazy demanding new information.

...and that scepter.

Crimany, I love this fandom.
